Made in the Cradle of Humankind in South Africa, these recent sculptural works reference the tension implicit in the evolution of the natural world and explore ideas around animals as totemic forces, as well as the role of materiality and spirituality in the ancient civilizations of the Americas and Africa. Of particular focus is gold as a metal of unique properties central to the colonialism of both South Africa and the artist’s native Mexico.
